OBAMAHOLICS ENGAGED AT WHITE HOUSE GATES
The White House gates aren’t usually a romantic spot, but it seemed like the only option for former Obama campaigner Franco Ripple, who popped the question to his fiancée Ashley Ligas right there on Pennsylvania Ave.
The pair of recovering Obamaholics from Florida – he was a field organizer, she was a team leader coordinating volunteers – had come to D.C. for a weekend getaway.
Ripple, 27, had big plans. He had the ring – and in hopes of proposing during a tour of the West Wing, he booked an 8:55 p.m. walk-through on Friday night.
He was unsure of where the monumental moment would take place once inside. Possibly at the door of the Oval Office, which is open but roped off during tours, allowing visitors to just peek inside. He also sought the advice of his aunt, Anita McBride, who served as Laura Bush’s chief of staff. McBride recommended the Rose Garden.
As they arrived at the White House gates, Ripple still hadn’t made up his mind. But it didn’t matter anyway. Due to a mix-up, they weren’t on the list for the tour.
After some confusion and attempts to get a tour later in the weekend, Ripple decided not to wait and asked Ligas to marry him on the spot.
“We’re still very thrilled to be only the second all-Florida Obama couple to get engaged,” Ripple said, while conceding that not being able to do it inside was “disappointing.”
