President Bush has now taken that principle and turned it on its head: for this White House, partisan politics now begins at the water’s edge, no matter the seriousness and gravity of the occasion. Does the president have no shame?”

-
House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel, on perhaps the most disgusting example of public foreign policy George Bush has ever displayed, coming at the 60th Anniversary of Israel’s independence, to Israel’s Knesset:

“Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is—the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

Embarrassing day to be American.
(via trappedintime)

ngoc: Bobby Kennedy’s Funeral Train. Unbearably poignant. Dad and I once had a long chat about RFK and his ability to connect with people. He was not a perfect man, but he had a sense of moral purpose. His decision to speak in Indianopolis at a predominantly black neighborhood immediately after Martin Luther King’s assassination, even after being told by the Chief of Police that he wouldn’t be able to provide protection, was incredibly courageous. RFK refused the speech prepared by his press secretary and speechwriter and spoke from the heart, invoking his own experience with his brother’s assassination, the only time he ever spoke about the subject. He quoted the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus and asked for unity between blacks and whites. Indianapolis was calm that night while riots went on in other major American cities. It’s been almost 40 years since his death, and I am moved to tears watching this video.

travors:

Ordinary people live life against the law. And that’s what we’re doing to our kids. They live life knowing they live it against the law. That realization is extraordinarily corrupting. In a democracy we ought to be able to do better, do better at least for them, if not for opening business.”

- Larry Lessing’s TED talk, “How Creativity Is Being Strangled By The Law”.
